Possible better translations for known skills names

I've noticed that some skills which presumably should have english names, in fact have nonsensical names or weird sounding ones.

For example: Liliruka's Artel Assist makes a lot more sense if you swap a couple consonants (which in japanese are written the same way) and turn it into Alter Assist. It becomes a skill name which implies that it alters the efficacy of Lili as an "assistant", which is actually what the skill does.

Then there is Bell's signature skill, here written as Liaris Freese, which makes no sense at all. I know almost for sure that the correct english name should be Realize Phrase. This would match with a song in the soundtrack which bears the subtitle "Realize" in english, and is also another way to say "grant a wish", which is basically what that overpowered skill does.

The problem with both of those suggestions is that they don't work phonetically. As an example, compare Liaris with Realize. You're also conveniently ignoring that Realize is Lili's character song and not Bell's, therefore there's really no connection between the two

Not everything in the series is English or needs to be English, the author uses Japanese and Latin and can also make up his own stuff

It's better for name to seem nonsensical then to potentially give readers false impression. Liaris Freese means essentially nothing so the reader needs to rely on the narrative to understand it. Realis Phrase seems a lot like realize phrase giving the potential connotation that it might help realize some statement or another. Might even have something to do with the regularity that Liaris Freese is misunderstood.

Artel is actually a good choice of word. The word is Russian in origin with meaning the traditional association of labors for collective work or a cooperative craft society. Basicly it implies a relation to laboring for someone else.

About the phonetical match between Realize and Liaris, since R and L in japanese are both written with the same set of phonetical syllabics, it's the sound of the words that you should look at:

Ree-Ah-Lee-S(u) e Lee-Ah-Ree-S(u) are basically the same word with just inverted letters, just as maybe the case for Artel-Alter.

And no, the skill names in this story all have a meaning, both in their actual pronounce and in their hidden kanji meaning (such as Argonaut - Heroic Desire).

If Artel has a meaning itself (albeit seemingly an acronym), though, then that skill may contain a non translatable double-meaning, since in japanese both Artel and Alter are written and pronounced the same.

Liaris is リアリス while realize is リアライズ. They aren't spelled the same way nor are they pronounced the same either: Riarisu and Riaraizu. And no, Artel and Alter (アーテル/Aateru and アルター/Arutaa respectively) are not written the same either, nor are they pronounced the same

@Kevhunt: I remember there being an explanation behind what Liaris Freese meant but I'm not sure where it is on the wiki

@ Angelo: Let me rephrase that Liaris Freeze means essentially nothing to an English reader.

I know it has a lot more nuance in Japanese. Ivaannom gave the translation and explanation a few month ago somewhere.

Reposting this from another forum.

The meaning of Liaris Freese comes from hanakotoba, Japanese flower language.
Liaris is the liatris, which means 'burning passion'
Freese is the freesia, which means 'admiration' or 'adoration'
This matches the kanji used with Liaris Freese, , 憧憬一途, which means 'wholehearted longing'

you should also take into account, that most Japanese aren´t that good at speaking english, so Skillnames might not be correctly "translated" to japanese in the first place. If Omori-san didn´t know the exact pronunciation, then "Alter" which should be "アルター" if translated phonetically, quickly becomes "アールテル" since that is what the letters translated to in japanese when not taking the pronunciation into account. Same with "Liaris Freese" being "リアリス・フレーゼ" from "realize phrase". There are no words I know in japanese that end with "E" so that would explain the ス at the end of リアリス.

You do realize that English words have been in Japanese vocabulary since the mid 1900s, right? Your claim is more of a stereotype than anything

Both of your examples are based on your assumption that these words are supposed to be English, which isn't true. These days you could easily type in Alter into Wikipedia or any other translation site and get the proper translation. Even if you changed it to romaji, it would be Arutaa, which is still phonetically closer to Alter than Aaruteru. Your claim that "there are no words that end in e" makes no sense because ゼ already makes a ze sound, plus Liaris Freese actually has a meaning while Realize Phrase doesn't
