I am a bit curious about whether there has been and supplemental material released for the series that has not made it out of Japan.
If there is and you have read it, do you think that it is needed to better understand the story and the universe as a whole?
Depends on what you mean by "only released in Japan". There have been side stories and drama cds that have been fan translated, but are you talking about officially translated and/or dubbed?
If so, there is plenty of stuff that's only in Japanese like side stories, booklets, and drama cds. Most side stories are for fun but there are some that have relevant information in them. They do supplement the light novels but I wouldn't say that they're required reading
I have heard about material being released with the Blu-ray discs for both the main series and SO series and those are what I am mostly referring to.I am wondering if they have been officially translated and can be purchased.
I see dicussions on the forum from time to time and I do not know what they are talking about so I feel like I might be missing something or if something was lost in Yen Press' translation of the material.

No and they probably never will

If you don't understand something then you can just ask us. Generally other users are talking about stuff from my summaries of Japanese content so if you read those then you should be fine. There is also information from spoiler blogs and the app as well
