Hey, I don't know if you still need help, but if you do, here it is.
From what I understood, there are three types of writting in japanese: hiragana, katakana and kanji. Hiragana and katakana just have different ways of being written and the pronunciation doesn't change. In other wors, I think it is just a matter of formal, informal, etc. context. Kanji is without a doubt the hardest to learn, since each character literally represents one idea and there are thousands of them. Actually, even japanese have a hard time learning them, so kanji always come with smaller hiragana characters next to it, so that you know what they mean. I think manga's and novel's are written in hiragana, but maybe I'm wrong on that one. If you want to start learning japanese, I think you should start with hiragana.
Here is my advise: go to youtube and search for japanese vocabulary. I think you will find a video that says: Learn ALL hiragana in 1 hour. Watch it. It is really helpfull.
