There has been a lot of moves in Europe between Crunchyroll and the other major streaming services recently. Mainly they had some sort of M&A with Wakanim, the leader in french speaking countries (they had the Danmachi license until then) which was owned by Aniplex and was also available in Germany, Austria, the Norse countries, Switzerland, Russia, and England, and they own 50% of the third biggest French service, now the only other "anime" streaming service not own by Sony is Netflix.
So I think all those moves made it so they just can't run a free service anymore without losing too much money, and it may have impacted every countries where it is available (it wouldn't be fair if some countries where to have free/ad-service and the others were forced to pay).
