It's not like Finn was purposely sacrificing them, it's just how the situation has degenerated, he himself thought it would be his team squad that would be targeted. Filvis' decision of targeting 1 of the 2 least likely squads was by definition unexpected. At least he bounced back by giving them everything he could to increase their survival rate as much as possible.

It doesn't change the fact that they have to engage in battle with all Demi-spirits to occupied them ensuring Fels can sneak & destroy the magic core stopping the omnidirectional magic barrage of the green flesh. The plan was to clear the pat for the main assault force (Freya Familia) join the battle.
