I always liked Bete since the beginning, he definitely makes things interesting in the Loki Familia. I expected him to have a more complex past as early as DM3, unfortunately, he'd be a far stronger adventurer if he just cooled down a bit and learned to let go.
It's also too bad the author never intended to go too deep into this background, and probably didn't try too hard when he did. In many ways, Bete is immature in the way that he resorts to aggression to protect himself against the pain of losing people (and to protect others from injury or death). However, I enjoy his interactions with Riveria, the twins, and Lena.
I like how he was able to use the Argonaut ability differently and apply it to boosting his speed. However, the main issue highlighted by using Argonaut is the energy consumption and loss of stamina, which makes spamming the ability taxing on the user.
I also like how Ryuu was able to use her Luminous Wind to navigate through the air when fighting the Juggernaut, and there will likely be opportunities for Bell to use Firebolt in similar ways such as when the recoil helped him escape a collapsing passageway. Though, I don't think a regular Firebolt produces too much recoil, and combining it with Argonaut results in the aforementioned issue.
Yes, I do agree it is early for them to have a kiss. I hold this opinion even though we are probably more than halfway through the series and the main hero and heroine haven't had any meaningful interactions yet. At least they've held hands already, though it wasn't in any romantic way, but it's usually a pretty big deal in anime series.
My criticism about a god's maturity isn't limited to Hestia, but she's the one that comes to mind that exhibits this character trait the most in the series. Overall, I simply have the view that age brings the opportunity to understand and gain wisdom, and because of this immortals should be held to a higher standard than mortals. So, even if divine beings don't actively pursue knowledge and have no obligation to seek knowledge, the fact that they do live a countless number of years almost necessarily means they should have a sizeable understanding of the world and the universe from a purely probabilistic perspective. However, Hestia who was known for being a lazy recluse, likely didn't take advantage of this opportunity and now is largely ignorant as a result. Perhaps the author wanted to show how her detachment translated into her personality? Of course, this is separate from the author accurately portraying the gods' personas from mythology, which is something I'm not really disputing.
I also feel that my criticism won't go away even though I know the author has explained the divine beings shouldn't be compared to humans, that they don't change, have different views of love and death, and don't have many attachments compared to humans.
Additionally, I consider Fels in a different category from gods even though he (it) is immortal too. I supposed the human element of Fels' personality allows him to relate better with humans despite understanding the unpredictable nature of gods.
Hestia, as a goddess, should try to act her age. I find it hard to believe that Hestia exhibits such childishness despite supposedly having lived for eons.
The fights would be very different if realism was the goal, so I give the author a pass when it comes to the fight scenes--this is meant to be for entertainment right?
I'm a Ryuu fan, and even I believe she would need to be the same level as Ais to beat her.
To me, it almost seems like Ryuu shut herself off from normal emotions for the past 5 years out of guilt and atonement. In many ways her emotional seclusion is like Ais. Except Ais is out for revenge and possibly for rescue. It may also be her elven propriety or romanticist notions of love. Yet, 21 is still a bit young, especially if you have personal issues. So perhaps her immaturity can be forgiven?
I'm not exactly sure if the responsibility of producing a pure-blooded elf heir falls on her. I know she ran away from the high elf forest and from her father alongside Aina. So, she may have a as yet unrevealed sibling. In any case, I don't think producing an elf offspring requires high level parents. So there should be nothing wrong with her falling in love with someone younger or weaker than her.
^Orichalcum is also one of the most expensive metals and finding the ore naturally must be difficult. Welf somehow managed to forge Adamantite without any experience and under threat of a monster horde, but I should think that even he would need some time to master Orichalcum smithing.
Yes, Freya is definitely an interesting figure in DanMachi. I'm curious in seeing what direction the author chooses to go for the Bell and Freya interactions--they could be aggressive or she may become like a watchful Aunt to Bell.
The author is probably saving Ais' backstory and special moments with Bell for the end. We still need some more Bell x Syr moments, and let us finally get more Bell x Freya moments too.
Bell and Ryuu were trying to sneak through the colosseum, then later Bell went around the exits to save Ryuu. Presumably Escape might have activated during that 5 minute run, but the other times Bell couldn't afford to try to run past the monsters when Ryuu's leg was injured and both of them were exhausted.
I mentioned this before in another thread, but the weapon is actually extremely cheap considering Bell's insane growth ability. When Hephaestus made the weapon she never could have known how fast Bell would grow, and probably priced the weapon based on the assumption that it would likely take him years before using it to its full potential. If Bell gets above level 6 or 7, the knife may grow to be the strongest in the world and worth far more than what Hestia was charged for it. For example, superior grade weapons already cost around 100 million valis or more, with the best ones costing several hundred million (Riveria's staff, Ottar's sword). As long as Bell keeps improving, theoretically Hestia Knife has no limit to its attack power. Additionally, once Bell takes more trips to the deeper levels, recuperating the costs of the weapon should be fairly quick. As an added bonus, it also provided inspiration for Welf to create the UMS.
Yes, Riveria is level 6, but she can't beat Gareth's nearly maxed out Strength. Also, I'm sure Gareth would get to them first if something does happen. He may even set the record for farthest object thrown.
She has her short swords, but she has no weapon to take advantage of a longer reach.
If Ryuu is looking to boost her magic, she may want to try using a weapon with embedded magic stones and the special materials used by Riveria or Lefiya in addition to using Mithril. For example, Bete's Flosvirt is made of Mithril and it uses gems to absorb magic and strengthen his attacks.
The whole idea of having a wooden sword seems quite odd to me. I know that it is supposed to be made from a branch of a holy tree and Ryuu has used it to much success over the years, but I can't imagine a wooden sword faring too well against metal weapons. However, in this universe wooden blades can be suitable weapons. Aisha also has a wooden weapon even though she is an Amazoness and loves to fight. At this point she can make another order request to the Goibniu Familia for a second wooden sword from her homeland, or she can ask Welf or Tsubaki for a metal blade (possibly made of Mithril).
I like to believe she used Alvs Lumina as symbolism of her mental distance from the people of Orario, and now that she's found a place to belong and found people she can respect (among other things) she could be open to getting a more standard weapon.
It makes sense that the strongest familias for almost a 1000 years would have stronger adventurers compared to today's heroes. Not only would the strongest adventurers naturally want to go to either Hera or Zeus, but the familias would have the collective knowledge and experiences of almost a millennium--including tricks and efficiencies. It would be similar to playing an RPG with an Quick XP Guide showing the best places to grind and train.
I don't think she'll have any issues handling herself if things end poorly. She should be mature enough to deal with it, and there's always Gareth who would probably throw anyone that mistreats her over the city wall.
