The Far East (極東 Kyokutō) is an island country and a nation type Familia led by Amaterasu.

Overview[]

The Far East is an island country surrounded by water and has four different seasons. It is a large nation type familia ruled by the Imperial Court (朝廷 Chōtei), with Amaterasu as its main God.[1] The temple Takemikazuchi comes from is located at the lowest part of the Imperial Court.[2]

There are many groups across the country that are not part of the Amaterasu Familia and do not obey. The further one goes from the capital, the more turbulent and dangerous the landscape becomes, reflecting the image of a country devastated by war, due to people and monsters.[1] As a country wrought with wars, diseases and monsters, many children are orphans.

Royal Families[]

There is a group of eight families which are high-ranking clans that serve the Imperial Court. They are in charge of managing the political aspect of the nation and serve as leading figures of the country.[3]

The families are numbered: Ichijou (条), Niijou (条), Sanjou (条) and so on.[3][Note 1] The surnames of their members are not the same as the family names, however. They are written in katakana and the particle no (ノ) is added to symbolize that they belong to that house. Thus, for example, the full name of Kaguya (輝夜), who was a member of the Gojou (五条, ゴジョウ in katakana), was written as Gojouno Kaguya (ゴジョウノ・輝夜) and actually means "Kaguya of the Gojou (house)".[4]

There used to be a total of nine families, but the Rokujou (六条), the sixth family, staged a coup and were destroyed, which is why there are only eight families today.[4] Each family has its role to fulfill within the Imperial Court. The Sanjou are in charge of divine matters related to Amaterasu while the Gojou are in charge of dark works.[2]

Gojou[]

The Gojou House (五条家 Gojōke) basically serves as the soldiers of the Imperial Court and are in charge of protecting the laws and justice of the Far East. However, they also perform various darker jobs for the Imperial Court and are sometimes even ordered to kill people who are not necessarily criminals. All of its members also belong to the Familia of the Goddess of Beauty Konohanasakuya-hime.[4]

Shortly after the beginning of the Age of Gods they realized how strong their blood was and how certain magics and skills are inherited. This has allowed all of their descendants to inherit the magic and skill of their founder over the course of a thousand years, making it possible to mass produce soldiers with the same powers.[5] The development of skills or magic in the Far East is a rarity, so this makes them valuable to the Imperial Court.[4]

The Gojou practice selective breeding to ensure that they pass on their powers from generation to generation. Members are forbidden from forming relationships outside of with other family members. The women are given a poison that basically turns their bodies into living vessels of poison, which will kill any man who tries to sleep with one of them. To combat this the men of the family regularly drink an alcoholic beverage that acts as an antidote and thus allows them to father heirs with the female members of their family.[4]

The fact that all of their members possess the same set of powers led to the development of the "ultimate standardization" of their training as assassins. Although they are raised as expendable pawns they have all inherited the secrets of the first Gojou, their founder, and master killing and secret techniques that have been perfected over a thousand years.[5]

The female members of the Gojou wear masks with a cherry blossom pattern that cover the upper half of their faces. All of the members also look more or less the same since they are very closely related.[4]
