Ottar (オッタル) is the captain of the Freya Familia.
Appearance[]
Ottar is a tall and heavily muscular dark-skinned Boaz with rust-colored hair and eyes, and a pair of boar ears. He wears a dark blue sleeveless top with a red pectoral and a collar-like part, grey pants, and brown and gray shoes.
Personality[]
Ottar is a very quiet, simple person who tends to maintain a stoic expression most of the time. His constant monotony is a trait that has accompanied him from an early age. As a kid he did not cry or laugh and lacked the characteristic tenderness of children, limiting himself to just following Freya.
Similarly, from a young age he developed another of his main distinctive traits, which is his devotion to his Goddess.
Ottar is extremely loyal to Freya and will follow her orders. Nonetheless, he isn't blindly obedient nor is he clouded by his loyalty. He has repeatedly argued against her wishes for the consequences that these could entail or has acted on his own when he believes that it is the best for her.
He is shown to not feel any jealousy toward Freya's interest in Bell and does not allow anyone to insult Freya, becoming enraged if they do so. His devotion to her has represented one of his main motivations in his life, serving as his first incentive to become stronger.
He has the opposite belief of Eina, believing that adventurers would never break out their shell if they didn't adventure. Linked to this, he is a quite harsh person in his training methods.
He seems to hold a high standard as to the level of ability that he expects of each individual, such expectations being possibly exceeded only by the degree of demand he has for himself.
When he prepared a Minotaur for Bell to battle, he made sure to strengthen it extensively as, although he did not feel jealous, according to him the boy had to meet a minimum to be worthy of the attention of his Goddess. During the week that he dedicated to training Ais, he wasn't gentle with the swordswoman at any moment, constantly pushing her to her limits with no room for breaks and throwing attacks that could easily kill her in case she made the slightest slip.
As one of the few adventurers who are still active that has clashed with the Zeus and Hera Familias, his personality is greatly influenced by his experiences facing them. Despite losing countless times confronting them, he never held a grudge against them, but blamed himself for his own inadequacies and weakness, his hatred for this weakness being one of his main motivations for becoming stronger.
Having grown with figures such as the Levels 8 and 9 from Zeus and Hera, Ottar has always been dissatisfied with his power and considers himself to still be green despite being a far more powerful and seasoned warrior than any other adventurer from the current generation.
He remains humble of his abilities and never gloats about it. Ottar also recognizes his defects and is conscious of his lack of ability as a leader. However, he does not belittle himself either, not hesitating to acknowledge that he is stronger than someone else.
His most admired trait is his unabating will and resolve to always surpass his limits. He often looks for new challenges to face and shows interest upon hearing of opponents who may present a good duel, his fighting spirit rekindling after hearing how powerful Revis was. He is well respected by Gods and mortals alike with influential people like Finn trusting him completely even though they are from different Familias.
As someone centered on getting stronger, he will follow any advice to attain his goal, sometimes taking it a bit too far. When Mia told him that he wouldn't be able to grow if he didn't eat properly, he started to eat every day with a voracious and unbelievable appetite, a habit that he keeps to this very day.
Despite being a member of the Freya Familia, he has been shown to help others, such as when he used an elixir on Mikoto after finding her gravely injured following her fight with Ishtar Familia.
He also recognizes and respects those who are strong or accomplish a great feat, as well as those who demonstrate great resolve to become stronger, such as when he recognized Ais' tenacity to get stronger or when he praises Bell every time he overcomes a challenge.
Although he is not particularly sociable, he is a very perceptive fighter regarding others in combat, capable to understand their thoughts and their resolution without exchanging a single word, realizing all this through the will that they transmit and show through their weapons when he faces them. His instincts as a warrior are so developed that even without a brilliant mind like Hedin's he had a presentiment of the Elf's plans and guessed his eventual betrayal correctly.
History[]
When Ottar was a child, he was abandoned without even having known his own name. Freya found him dying in an alley somewhere and told him he was beautiful and took him into her Familia. She also gave him his name at this time. Due to her material support and emotional warmth, Freya would become everything to Ottar. He joined her Familia a few years later after he established a clear sense of self.
Mia, at the request of Freya, was tasked to look after Ottar when he first joined. After obtaining his falna he waited for a year until finally immersing in the daily baptism on the fields of Folkvangr, where he was frequently crushed by the earlier members close to the brink of death, reaching Level 2 just a year later.
Ottar clashed numerous times with the Zeus and Hera Familias before they were defeated by the One Eyed Black Dragon and were forced out of Orario. Each time ended in him being defeated.
At the age of 17, while still a Level 5, Ottar became the vice-captain of his Familia and reached Level 6 soon after. During Orario's Dark Age, he became the Familia's captain after all the members who joined before him were gone. Seven years ago, he became Level 7 after defeating Zald during the Great Feud.
At some point in the past, Ottar half-killed Balor, the Monster Rex of the 49th floor. Later, after learning of Ais defeating Udaeus by herself, he also defeated Udaeus by himself while managing to obtain Udaeus' sword.
Abilities[]
Magnificent Power: Ottar is an exceptionally fearsome opponent in combat. Asterius recognized he couldn't defeat him even in full physical condition and believes he could be even more powerful than Ais using Ariel and Avenger simultaneously. During the final battle in Knossos he easily overwhelmed a Grand Treant Demi Spirit.
In the War Game against the alliance led by the Hestia Familia, Ottar was capable of overpowering the combined assault of Bell, Ryuu, and Mia without them breaking through his defense. Upon beastifying, he was capable of overwhelming Bell, Ryuu, Mia, and Hedin at the same time with great ease. Later on, he was able to continue facing them even after everyone had received a level boost from Haruhime. Although he was ultimately defeated, the battle ended with Hedin knocked out and Ryuu and Mia totally exhausted, with Bell being the only one still able to move, and even then Ottar could fight again, only requiring a short break to recover enough.
Immense Physical Prowess: As a Level 7, Ottar's physical abilities are all immeasurably superior to those of a normal person. In terms of raw physical prowess, his abilities are also far superior to those of any Level 6 or below. Currently, Ottar's stats are higher than Zald's and Alfia's,[1] without counting effects of skills and such.[2]
Monumental Strength: Ottar possesses physical strength capable of overpowering huge monsters and high-level adventures with minimal efforts, such as when he cut a Grand Treant Demi Spirit's fire magic in half and cut halfway through its resilient stem. His strength is so massive that very few weapons are capable of enduring it. By employing the full extent of his strength he was even able to counter Ais' Lil Rafaga. In the war against Warusa he cut a Basilisk perfectly in half and generated an earthquake that spread over several kilometers with a single attack.
He is also able to kill several monsters from the 37th Floor with just the shockwaves from his normal attacks. After beastifying, his strength increased enough to knock down and heavily injure Bell, Ryuu, Mia, and Hedin easily with a single attack each. Subsequently, by hitting the ground he created a shockwave so powerful that it completely destroyed the surrounding area, sent his opponents flying and temporarily knocked them out.
Monumental Speed, Agility, and Reflexes: Ottar is an extremely fast individual with an amazing response speed. In his confrontation with Ais, he easily blocked all of her attacks and was able to maintain such superiority even after she started using Ariel, describing her moves as tepid. Likewise, despite being focused on her, he managed to react to the surprise attacks from a bunch of high Level 5s, Tiona, Tione and Bete, the latter of whom was so fast that Level 3s could barely follow his movements with their eyes.
His massive speed allows him to react to face multiple opponents at the same time without problems. He could effortlessly catch attacks from Allen, who moves at such speeds that he is imperceptible to all but other first-class adventurers, and immediately proceed to defend himself against the various attacks from Hogni and the repeated simultaneous attacks from different directions of the Gulliver Brothers in quick succession. Furthermore, when he went after Bell he moved so fast he seemed to disappear from the perspective of a high Level 4 Ryuu.
In the Great Faction War, he faced the simultaneous assault of Bell, Ryuu, and Mia without much trouble. He even proved to be quick enough to alternate between fending off their attacks and reciting the chant of his magic one sentence at a time until successfully finishing it. By beastifying, he became so fast that his opponents were unable to even react to his attack. At one instance, it was as though he had teleported to all the Level 6s, as all Hedin could see was a palm before it grabbed and smashed his head. He was also able to deal with Bell, Ryuu, Mia, and Hedin, who had all received a level boost, at the same time.
Monumental Durability: Ottar possesses a superhuman resilience which, in conjunction with his abilities as a warrior, allows him to resist any attack like an immovable fortress. In his duel with Udaeus, he could take the monster's most powerful attack directly without it breaking through his defense, though he was unable to fully withstand the full force of the attack, ending up with several damaged bones. In the Great Faction War, he took the full force of over 500 lightning orbs from Hedin's Caelus Hildr, each of which can knock out a second class adventurer, a barrage of Bell's Firebolts, and Hedin's Varian Hildr.
Despite taking the brunt of said assault, and consequently having been severily injured, a beastified Ottar could later survive a shovel strike and a flurry of punches from Mia, a barrage of all the orbs from Ryuu's Luminous Wind, and a punch along with a Firebolt strengthened by a 60 seconds Argonaut charge enhanced by a Limit Off from Bell, despite the latter being strengthened by Hedin's Laurus Hildr, and all of them having received a level boost as well, though he was left in a severe state.
Monumental Endurance, Stamina, and Mind: Ottar has a remarkable endurance that allows him to perform great feats and withstand monumental attacks and challenges. When training Ais, they fought from before dusk till after dawn for more than a week. After each day's training, he was not even sweating while Ais was on the brink of collapse despite the multiple elixirs that were given to her. In his duel with Udaeus, he showed no concern in spite of his bones breaking and his skin being scorched.
His body has grown accustomed to the daily fights he experienced in the past and can fight for days on end. In his last training trip to the dungeon, he managed to face Balor and resist until he left the Monster Rex half dead and then, despite the critical state in which he was left, return by himself to the surface, traveling a journey of around 5 days at least. In the Great Faction War he kept his guard up while being assaulted by hundreds of magic projectiles from Hedin and Bell. Even as he was bleeding, burned, and severely injured to the point that he seemed to be on the verge of defeat, he resumed his assault on Bell, Ryuu, Mia, and Hedin unaffected by the severity of his condition and with fierce vigor.
Later he continued fighting against the four even with the accumulated damage and his beastification skill constantly draining his stamina and mind. He also withstood the dozens of electric shocks he suffered from Bell's attacks strengthened by Laurus Hildr and renewed his onslaught on his opponents. Even after being blown away by Bell, Ryuu and Mia's joint final attack, including the Argonaut-charged attack that he himself recognized could potentially defeat him on its own, Ottar managed to survive, get up and walk a bit to return to the battlefield before falling to his knees. Despite the fact that everyone believed he had finally been defeated, Ottar said that he only needed five minutes to recover and return to combat, a statement that Mia confirmed.
Vast Experience: With the knowledge Ottar has accumulated from all his battles, his tactics are shown to be the paragon of adventurers. He is able to remain composed and dissect any opponent's strategy and techniques perfectly. It was said that not even a genius and talent combined with 10 years of hard work could overcome it due to the sheer unbelievable number of predicaments he overcame.
- Expert Swordsman: Though he is able to wield different weapons, Ottar mainly relies on swords when fighting, to which he has demonstrated high proficiency with them. His mastery was shown to widely surpass that of Ais, who considers his level of skill to be frightening. In his fight with Allen, Hogni, and the Gulliver Brothers, he was capable of canalizing his superb techniques to fend off their continued and consecutive assaults with extreme ease despite only staying on the defensive throughout the entire battle. He primarily fights using a single sword, but when attacked by the Loki Familia executives he resorted to dual wielding to deal with their assault.
Perfect Defense: Ottar's defense is the sum of all the techniques and tactics that he has developed throughout his years as an adventurer. Using his power to stand firmly in place, his ability to deal with any attack with millimetric precision, trained eyes capable of seeing through any technique, and his extreme durability, Ottar is capable of weathering any attack, being compared to an immovable fortress. Rather than the power of his attacks, the rest of the Freya Familia executives recognized his defense as the real reason behind his fame.
Enhanced Senses: As a Human Beast, Ottar had very keen senses far better than those of most normal people. After acquiring his falna his senses sharpened even further. His senses further improved with each subsequent rank up.
Beastification (獣化): Beastification enables Ottar to unleash his wild instinct and power, or in other words, grow stronger by becoming violent. In addition to the power boost, the transformation causes his nails to grow into claws that he can use as weapons. Although he is consumed by his instincts, Ottar has a mastery of this state that allows him to attack with the ferocity of a beast and the skill of a warrior.
Magic[]
Hildis Vini (ヒルディス・ヴィーニ): Hildis Vini is a powerful short chant super strengthening magic which coats Ottar's weapon in a golden light and greatly amplifies the power of an attack. Despite its simple nature, when combined with Ottar's extraordinary strength it becomes an unimaginable killer move. Since it is not an enchantment magic, it can normally only be used in close combat, as it is unable to reach opponents at a far distance. However, when combined with Ottar's tremendous strength, he can generate a powerful shockwave slash with a terrifingly long range. Ottar can also spend only a fraction of power in a single attack of these to execute more than one per usage if he so desires.
Hildis Vini has an extremely bad consumption of mind. Ottar is incapable of using concurrent chanting but nonetheless can chant it in the middle of a battle by swapping between defending and reciting one sentence at a time. It was powerful enough to destroy half of Udaeus' body. In the War Game against the alliance led by the Hestia Familia, Ottar used it in a sword clash against a new Level 5 Bell, who retaliated with a 5 minute-charged Argo Vesta. The attack impressively proved a match for Bell's strike, though Ottar noted that if it wasn't for his higher level, Bell's attack would had been superior. Even Hedin had to pour an immense amount of mind into his Varian Hidlr to slightly alter the direction of a shockwave slash made with only a fraction of Hildis Vini's power.
Skills[]
Vana Arganture (
When he activates the skill Ottar experiences an extreme increase in his basic, development and all other abilities so high that it is comparable to a rank up, granting him a Level 8's prowess. However, it isn't without its drawbacks. His stamina and mind greatly decrease each time it is used and the longer the state is kept the more exhaustion Ottar will accumulate, which cannot be fully recovered even by his automatic healing abilities.
Stortus Ottar (
Development Abilities[]
Hunter (狩人): Hunter improves Ottar's abilities against monsters he's fought before and gained excelia from.
Abnormal Resistance (耐異常): Abnormal Resistance negates the effect of abnormalities such as poison. Ottar has reached rank E, so he has an extremely high resistance to adverse effects; just at rank G almost nothing can affect one, even the strongest poisons in high doses.
Magic Resistance (魔防)
Crush (破砕)
Strong Body (剛身)
Healing Power (治力): Ottar can only use Healing Power through his skill, Stortus Ottar, when he continues to fight. The condition for the skill is in proportion to his status.
Spirit Healing (精癒): Ottar can only use Spirit Healing through his skill, Stortus Ottar, when he continues to fight. The condition for the skill is in proportion to his status. Spirit Healing automatically begins regenerating Ottar's mind at a low rate after using magic. It is a rare ability, with Riveria, Ais, and Hedin being the only adventurers so far that actually have it.
Equipment[]
Supreme Black Sword (覇黒の剣): The sword is an order made weapon by the Goibniu Familia that costs 410,000,000 valis. It was created from the Udaeus' Black Sword drop. The Goibniu Familia high smiths turned the drop item into an ingot and reforged it into a greatsword.
Weapons: In addition to his main weapon, Ottar wields a great axe and a great hammer. He also sometimes carries a pair of twin greatswords.
Armor: Ottar uses a few pieces of armor. He particularly employs his gauntlet to deflect and parry blades.
