Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no ha Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden Sword Oratoria (ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうか外伝 ソード・オラトリア) is a Japanese light novel series written by Oomori Fujino and illustrated by Haimura Kiyotaka. It is a spin off of Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no ha Machigatteiru Darou ka, and the series has been published by GA Bunko since January 2014. The series has been also adapted into an ongoing manga series, which began serialization in Monthly Gangan Joker in June 2014.
An anime adaptation for Sword Oratoria was announced and aired from April to June 2017.
In regards to the future of the spin off, Oomori has stated that he thinks Ais' past should be revealed in the main story so as not to do a disservice to the readers of the main story. On the other hand, he also wants to offer something different in Sword Oratoria, so the series has now shifted its focus to Lefiya. He also commented that he had thought out the plot with Enyo, but with that storyline concluded there is only one story left that he wants to do and, although he is happy with ending the story at that point, he wonders what will happen next, and if the series should end there.[1]
Plot[]
At the center of Orario is a vast underground labyrinth known as the dungeon, in which an endless supply on monsters reside. Seeking enjoyment, the Gods and Goddess came down from Heaven, giving up their divine power, but in return, able to bestow some of it upon the mortals, who become part of their Familia.
The primary protectors of the city, and one of its top Familia, is the Loki Familia. In the aftermath of an expedition in the Dungeon, First Class adventurer Ais Wallenstein has a fateful encounter with a young boy named Bell Cranel. Ais attempts to find a new sense of reinvigoration in her quest to become stronger, while another Familia member, Lefiya Viridis, struggles with her own insecurities regarding catching up to Ais and being helpful to her Familia. During the Monsterphilia event, they encounter mysterious new plant-like monsters from the Dungeon emerging on the surface, which they deal with and plan to investigate. (Volume 1)
Visiting the Dungeon on an exploration trip, the members of the Loki Familia come upon a murder in Rivira and agree to assist. Meanwhile, Loki encounters Dionysus, who is also investigating the mysterious new monsters, leading her to accept a reluctant alliance. During the murder mystery, Ais ends up facing off against a woman known as Revis, who seems to know something about her past, referring to her as "Aria". The encounter spurs Ais to improve herself further, resulting in levelling up to Level 6. After a couple close encounters with Bell, Ais is approached by a mysterious benefactor, requesting her assistance in a mission. (Volume 2)
Ais accepts the request and accompanies the members of the Hermes Familia to venture into the Dungeon to discover the mystery of the monster pantry on the 24th floor. At this same time, Loki sends Lefiya and Bete Loga to assist, while Dionysus sends Filvis Challia to help them, a supposedly cursed elf girl that Lefiya ends up befriending. They all end up tracking down the one responsible, a member of the Evilus factions known as Vendetta, but is killed by Revis, who tells Ais to go to the 59th Floor if they desire answers. (Volume 3)
After the cryptic message, the Loki Familia prepare an expedition into the 59th Floor, the furthest they've ever been. Ais formally meets Bell, and finding a newfound interest in his rapid growth, agrees to help train him. She attempts to save him when he is suddenly attacked by a Minotaur during the start of the expedition, but is surprised to see him defeat it all on his own. The Loki Familia eventually reach the 59th Floor, defeating the dangerous artificial spirit that resides there, using this knowledge to help them in their plans to take down the rest of Evilus, and their mystery leader "Enyo", for good. (Volume 4)
While resting in Rivira, the Loki Familia help take care of Bell and his party when they prematurely stumble onto the floor. A jealous Lefiya gets into a fight with Bell, which causes the two of them to be separated from everyone. They come across a group of Evilus members scheming on the floor, engaging in battle until both sides retreat. Lefiya begins to reluctantly respect Bell upon seeing his fighting prowess, and the Loki Familia soon return back home. (Volume 5)
The Loki Familia head outside Orario to the port city of Melen in order to investigate a second entrance into the Dungeon the Evilus factions have been using. They encounter the Kali Familia, the original Familia of Tione and Tiona Hiryute, sparking bad memories for the girls. Loki Familia are then suddenly attacked by an alliance of the Kali and Ishtar Familias, leading to a battle with Loki Familia coming out on top, and the Hiryute sisters receiving closure. (Volume 6)
Loki Familia sets out on an expedition to inspect Daedalus Street, discovering the alternate entrances into the Dungeon through Knossos. However, it turns out to be a trap set by the Evilus factions, led by Thanatos and Revis. The Familia fight their way through the labyrinth to eventually escape back to the surface, but face heavy losses as a result. (Volume 7)
Due to Bete's condescending treatment over their fallen Familia members, he is temporarily dismissed from the Familia, and encounters a former member of Ishtar Familia. He and Loki Familia discover the Evilus factions are hunting down the Amazons to acquire a key to Knossos that Ishtar possessed, leading to a scramble to defend the women and track down the key. They are able to defeat their attackers, and Bete reconciles with his Familia, but the key still remains missing. (Volume 8)
Ares and his Familia attack Orario, however the adventurers, in particularly Loki Familia, prove too strong for them to handle. During the downtime, Lefiya asks Riveria Ljos Alf to learn more about Ais' past, leading her to reveal when she first joined Loki Familia, and how she grew into who she is today. Meanwhile, Ais, Bell, and Hestia end up in a town on the outskirts of Orario, where Ais also reminisces on her past. (Volume 9)
The Loki Familia learn about a series of appearances of armed monsters, and that Bell is at the centre of it. While they plan to combat Hestia Familia, who they are aware are aiding the beasts, Finn Deimne uses the opportunity to lure the Evilus factions out of hiding, allowing them to steal a key to Knossos from them. The plan ends up a success and the Familia infiltrates Knossos, inadvertently running into the monsters, known as the Xenos. They discover that they are intelligent and capable of speech, and while they are initially apprehensive, realizing they share a common enemy, Finn suggests an alliance to take out the remaining Evilus members. (Volume 10)
Loki Familia gather up their allies, including Dionysus Familia and the secret Xenos, to prepare for the big battle. Meanwhile, Ais feels tripped up over her previous encounter with Bell and the discovery that not all monsters are evil, leading her to convince Freya to let Ottar train her. The Loki Familia team execute their excursion, infiltrating Knossos and confronting Thanatos. However, Dionysus is seemingly killed by Enyo, as his entire Familia is murdered by the incoming Demi Spirit plague. Thanatos sacrifices himself allowing Loki Familia to escape, with one of the Xenos saving Finn's life. (Volume 11)
Investigating Enyo's ultimate goal, they are able to determine he plans to use the power of the Demi Spirits to create a barrier that will completely destroy Orario. With the fate of the city in their hands, Loki Familia set out to destroy the threat for good. Loki confronts Enyo, revealing him to be Dionysus the entire time, while Filvis, who also faked her death, is revealed to Lefiya to be his right-hand. Loki Familia summons all their allies, including Hermes Familia, Hephaestus Familia, Kali Familia, Freya Familia, the Xenos, and even Hestia Familia to destroy the Spirits, with Ais fighting Revis and Lefiya fighting Filvis. Dionysus activates his trump card, however Bell's presence is enough to swiftly turn the tide, allowing everyone to succeed and save the city. Dionysus kills himself to return to Heaven, while a remorseful Filvis dies in a grieving Lefiya's arms. (Volume 12)
Lefiya continues to cope in the aftermath of the battle, where she ends up working as an advisor at the arriving School District that she grew up in, mentoring a group of young adventurers. She struggles to find a way to teach them as she forces her own self to change, but the students are able to learn with her as they venture through the Dungeon, while she learns to let go and be herself. (Volume 13)
